Safety

The Jeep Recon’s 360-degree camera is equipped with washers for its front and rear cameras, ensuring crystal-clear visibility in any weather condition. Conversely, the Subaru Solterra only offers a rear camera washer, which may not provide the same level of all-weather performance.

Both the Recon and the Solterra have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The Jeep Recon weighs 1602 to 1717 pounds more than the Subaru Solterra. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The Recon has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Solterra; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Recon is 3 inches wider in the front and 2.7 inches wider in the rear than on the Solterra.

For greater off-road capability the Recon has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Solterra (9.1 vs. 8.3 inches), allowing the Recon to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Recon has 3.5 inches more front headroom, .8 inches more front hip room, .6 inches more front shoulder room, 2.6 inches more rear headroom, 3.2 inches more rear legroom, 10.2 inches more rear hip room and 2.6 inches more rear shoulder room than the Solterra.

Cargo Capacity

The Recon has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Solterra with its rear seat up (30.3 vs. 23.8 cubic feet). The Recon has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Solterra with its rear seat folded (65.9 vs. 63.5 cubic feet).

A standard locking center console keeps your small valuables safer in the Recon. The Solterra doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Towing

Standard Trailer Sway Control on the Recon uses the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Solterra doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Ergonomics

The Recon’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Solterra’s power window (except driver window) and power lock switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the Recon to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Solterra doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Recon has a standard rear wiper. The Solterra doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

The Recon has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel is only available on the Solterra Limited/Touring.

The Jeep Recon has a standard Homelink wireless remote control system for garage door operation and device management, conveniently located on the overhead console. Homelink® eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries. Subaru charges extra for Homelink® on the Solterra.
