For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Dodge Charger have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision. The Fiat 500e doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Charger are reminded to check the back seat. The 500e doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Dodge Charger has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The 500e doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Charger has standard Rear Park Assist with Stop that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The 500e doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The Charger has all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The 500e doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

The Charger offers an optional 360° Surround View Camera to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The 500e only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

The Charger has a standard blind spot warning system that uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. A system to reveal vehicles in the 500e’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Charger has standard Rear Cross Path Detection, helping the driver avoid collisions. Fiat charges extra for Rear Cross Path Detection on the 500e.

Both the Charger and the 500e have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras and driver alert monitors.

The Dodge Charger weighs 2886 pounds more than the Fiat 500e. The NHTSA advises that heavier cars are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts. Crosswinds also affect lighter cars more.

Warranty

Dodge’s powertrain warranty covers the Charger 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Fiat covers the 500e. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the 500e ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 7 times as many Dodge dealers as there are Fiat dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Charger’s warranty.

Engine

The Charger Daytona R/T Coupe’s standard electric motors produce 379 more horsepower (496 vs. 117) and 242 lbs.-ft. more torque (404 vs. 162) than the 500e’s electric motor. The Charger Daytona Scat Pack Coupe’s standard electric motors produce 553 more horsepower (670 vs. 117) and 465 lbs.-ft. more torque (627 vs. 162) than the 500e’s electric motor.

As tested in Motor Trend the Charger Daytona Scat Pack Coupe is faster than the Fiat 500e:

Drivetrain

All-wheel drive, standard in the Charger, provides the best traction for acceleration in wet, dry, and icy conditions. In corners, all wheel drive allows both outside wheels to provide power, balancing the car. This allows for better handling. The Fiat 500e is not available with all wheel drive.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Charger’s brake rotors are larger than those on the 500e:

The Dodge Charger has standard four-wheel disc brakes for better stopping power and improved directional control in poor weather. Only rear drums come on the 500e. Drums can heat up and make stops longer, especially with antilock brakes that work much harder than conventional brakes.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Charger has larger standard tires than the 500e (245/55R18 vs. 205/45R17). The Charger Daytona Scat Pack Coupe’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the 500e (F:305/35R20 & R:325/35R20 vs. 205/45R17).

The Charger Daytona Scat Pack Coupe’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 500e’s 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Charger has standard 18-inch wheels. Only 17-inch wheels are available on the 500e. The Charger offers optional 20-inch wheels.

The Charger has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The 500e doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Suspension and Handling

For superior ride and handling, the Dodge Charger has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Fiat 500e has a rear torsion beam axle, with a semi-independent rear suspension.

The Charger offers an optional driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The 500e’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Charger’s wheelbase is 29.6 inches longer than on the 500e (121 inches vs. 91.4 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Charger is 10.1 inches wider in the front and 10.6 inches wider in the rear than the track on the 500e.

The Charger Daytona Scat Pack Coupe handles at .99 G’s, while the 500e pulls only .82 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skid pad test.

The Charger Daytona Scat Pack Coupe executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 3.5 seconds quicker than the 500e (24.1 seconds @ .84 average G’s vs. 27.6 seconds @ .64 average G’s).

Chassis

The Charger is 7.4 inches shorter in height than the 500e, making the Charger much easier to wash and garage and drive (lower center of gravity).

The front grille of the Charger uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The 500e doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Charger a Large car, while the 500e is rated a Mini compact.

The Charger has standard seating for 5 passengers; the 500e can only carry 4.

The Charger has 26.1 cubic feet more passenger volume than the 500e (103.1 vs. 77).

The Charger has .8 inches more front legroom, 6.5 inches more front hip room, 8.4 inches more front shoulder room, 1.5 inches more rear headroom, 7.7 inches more rear legroom, 10.9 inches more rear hip room and 9.8 inches more rear shoulder room than the 500e.

Cargo Capacity

The Charger Coupe has a much larger trunk with its rear seat up than the 500e (22.7 vs. 7.5 cubic feet).

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Charger. The 500e doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the Charger offers an optional power liftgate, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button. The 500e doesn’t offer a power liftgate.

Ergonomics

When two different drivers share the Charger, the optional memory system makes it convenient for both. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position, steering wheel position, outside mirror angle and radio stations. The 500e doesn’t offer a memory system.

The Charger’s optional easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The 500e doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Charger offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The 500e doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Charger’s front power windows open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The 500e’s power windows’ switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully.

On a hot day the Charger’s driver can lower all the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the 500e can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the Charger to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The 500e doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Charger has standard extendable sun visors. The 500e doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The Charger’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Fiat charges extra for heated mirrors on the 500e.

When the Charger with available tilt-down mirrors is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The 500e’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

The Charger has standard heated front and optional heated rear seats extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated seats aren’t available in the 500e.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the Charger keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The 500e doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

On extremely cold winter days, the Charger’s standard heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the car heater warms up. The 500e doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

The Charger has a standard center folding armrest for the rear passengers. A center armrest helps make rear passengers more comfortable and it can provide a boundary between children. The 500e doesn’t offer a rear seat center armrest.

The Charger’s standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. The 500e doesn’t offer dual zone air conditioning.

For greater rear passenger comfort, the Charger has standard rear a/c vents to keep rear occupants more comfortable. The 500e doesn’t offer rear vents.

Compared to the Fiat 500e, the Dodge Charger eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries with its standard integrated Homelink® universal remote controlled from the driver’s visor.

Recommendations

The Dodge Charger outsold the Fiat 500 by over 24 to one during 2024.
