2025 Dodge Hornet
2025 Mazda CX-70

Safety

The Hornet has standard Active Head Restraints, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Head Restraints system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The CX-70 doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Both the Hornet and the CX-70 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available around view monitors and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

There are over 4 times as many Dodge dealers as there are Mazda dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Hornet’s warranty.

Engine

The Hornet R/T’s 1.3 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 14 lbs.-ft. more torque (383 vs. 369) than the CX-70 Turbo S’ optional 3.3 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Car and Driver the Hornet GT 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder is faster than the CX-70 PHEV 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid:

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Hornet running its gasoline engine gets better mileage than the CX-70 running its gasoline engine:

The Hornet R/T can travel with zero emissions on electricity, only, on a full charge for 32 miles, up to 10% further than the CX-70 PHEV‘s -mile range on a full charge and a full tank of fuel. The CX-70 PHEV has to start its internal combustion engine after only 26 miles.

The Hornet has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The CX-70 doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Transmission

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Dodge Hornet, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the CX-70.

Brakes and Stopping

The Hornet stops much shorter than the CX-70:

Tires and Wheels

The Hornet’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the CX-70 Premium’s 45 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

The Hornet offers an optional driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The CX-70’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Hornet R/T handles at .87 G’s, while the CX-70 PHEV Premium Plus pulls only .82 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Hornet R/T executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the CX-70 PHEV Premium Plus (26.5 seconds @ .65 average G’s vs. 26.9 seconds @ .66 average G’s).

Chassis

The Dodge Hornet may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 1050 to 1150 pounds less than the Mazda CX-70.

The Hornet is 1 foot, 10.8 inches shorter than the CX-70, making the Hornet easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Hornet is 6.1 inches narrower than the CX-70, making the Hornet easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

Ergonomics

If the windows are left open on the Hornet the driver can close them all from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the CX-70 can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Hornet’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The CX-70’s power window (except driver window) switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

The Dodge Hornet has power folding mirrors that offer unparalleled convenience while maneuvering in tight places or parked. With the mirrors folded it’s easier to walk past and help prevent parking damage. The mirrors can be quickly unfolded when the driver is ready to leave. Power folding mirrors are only offered on the CX-70 Premium Plus/Turbo S.

The Hornet’s optional ParkSense Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The CX-70 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
